Battle of Britain 50th Anniversary Airshow – Boscombe Down 1990
The historic and photogenic venue of the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Boscombe Down in Wiltshire was a magnificent setting to hold the definitive Battle of Britain 50th anniversary airshow.
The event was organised by the very experienced International Air Tattoo team and drew contributors from the world over.
More than 130 British military aircraft were joined by 65 from the USA (including the US Navy) 19 from France and around 100 others from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
Two first time and very welcome participants were the Czechoslovakian Air Force and the United Arab Emirates.
The eight hour flying display proved to be Europe’s largest event of its kind and the sight of 13 Spitfires and Hurricanes in the air together followed by a scramble of 56 Sqn. Phantoms was a never to be forgotten climax.
